Facebook is in charge of a massive amount of data and in order to maintain its operations the Facebook This expanded with a large data center located in Newton Georgia. With most things in the tech industry, just as the data center was given close to launching the company realized that its capabilities would not meet the scaling needs of the platform. As a result, Facebook is now opening three more buildings on the campus that are dedicated to data center operations.
Facebook is planning to invest a total of $1 billion into its campus operations in Georgia. The first phase includes two new buildings totaling 1,000,000 ft.² that were first announced in the year 2018. The newest phase will add another 1.5million ft.² to the data center.
The data center capabilities of Facebook have been continuing to grow to support the user base as well as the increasing amount of video content and images that are launching across Facebook, Instagram, and future platforms planned by Facebook.
Since Facebook launched the oculus VR2 headset the newest initiative and data is to meet the capacity for a growing demand in VR so that the company can continue to sustainably roll out new VR improvements.
Alongside the data center improvements, Facebook is also investing in new solar projects throughout the area. Their latest solar investment will bring 435 MW of renewable energy to the local energy grid throughout their georgette data center.
Facebook already has a large number of data centers across the US including in New Albany Ohio, Los Lunas New Mexico, and Papillion Nebraska. Three additional data center sites are also launching across the United States in Alabama, Virginia, and Utah. To manage the overflow in these facilities before they are primarily used by Facebook, the company is planning on releasing their data centers to operators like Digital Realty trust and Cloud HQ.
